Croatia, officially known as the Republic of Croatia, is a country located in southern Europe. It is geographically a Pannonian, Mediterranean, and Balkan country, situated at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe. The capital and largest city is Zagreb. The territory of the Republic of Croatia was part of several joint states of the South Slavs after World War I, initially within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (briefly known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes), and later within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. After a referendum on independence in 1991, Croatia became an independent state.
It was admitted to the United Nations in 1992 . and is a member of the World Trade Organization and NATO.
Croatia officially became a candidate for membership in the European Union in 2004 and became a full member on July 1, 2013 .
